Lottery Odds and Lottery Scams

June 16th, 2008 DanielMillions Posted in Society | No Comments »

Nearly all people play the lottery in the hopes that they will win a huge amount and be able to retire luxuriously twenty or thirty years early. The chances of this happening for an individual are astronomical, and it is impractical for one to actually plan their life around a win. Mathematically, you can determine the odds of winning a lottery by using a formula. For example, if there are fifty numbers to choose from, and you must choose five, the chances of designing a winning ticket are 1:2,118,760.

This number is derived from the formula n (n-r) r, where n is the number of available choices, r is the number of choices you must pick, and the exclamation point is the factorial symbol. Therefore, in the above example, the expression would be evaluated as 50 (50-5) 5, which comes out as 2,118,760. Lottery players can apply this simple formula to different games to find out which one has the best odds, although many people do not see one in five million as being that much different from one in one million.

Probabilities of winning are increased when a full match is not required to win. Most large lotteries offer prizes for matching several of the numbers, such as a six number lottery paying out sums for choosing four or five numbers correct. The UK National Lottery awards amounts as low as ten euros for matching half the numbers. Other factors that contribute to a certain game’s odds include whether or not numbers can be repeated, how many winning numbers are drawn, and if order is significant.

Those who do not like buying lottery tickets can play for free. While there are virtually no real live free lotto vendors, there are plenty of ways to obtain no-cost entries online. Essentially, you are trading your personal information and advertising viewing for tickets. Of course, the prizes of these lotteries are slimmer than paid ones, and the odds are not much better either. In fact, it is hard to determine if a website is fixed or not (many probably are). However, there is still a chance of winning, so it makes sense to some to participate as much as possible.

Being that there is so much to gain from a lottery, there are always scam artists who try to fraud the lotto. A direct way to assure you win is to tamper with the machines that draw the balls. This is done by tampering with the balls in a machine, usually with the help of a lottery employee.

One famous scam occurred in Maryland in 1979, when lottery officials injected all balls, except four and six, with a liquid to weigh them down. The machine chose three balls, and because fours and sixes were the lightest, they were always chosen. Although the scammers had to buy many tickets with combinations of fours and sixes to win, the plan technically worked, even though the perpetrators were discovered shortly after.

Another scam that many people worldwide have received is a notice of winning a lottery they did not enter. Fake letters come in both email and regular mail, but they both have the same goal: Entice the receiver to send in money to release the funds from holding. Avoiding this type of scam is easy; just do not respond to a notice for a lottery you know you did not enter.

Fraudulent Lottery Emails and Common Scams

June 16th, 2008 DanielMillions Posted in Society | No Comments »

Recently I received an email stating that I had won a sum of money in the UK National Lottery. Knowing that I live in the U.S. and play the lottery in the U.S. only, I didn’t buy a ticket or ever play in the U.K. Lottery. After further investigation, I found out that receiving these types of emails is a common occurrence.

These are usually scam emails sent out to solicit or phish for personal information from the recipients of the email to be used, most likely, for identity theft purposes. Emails, such as this one that I received, often say Winning Notification or Lottery Sweepstakes Winner or some other derivative of such. These emails may also ask for a payment from you as a down payment to release the funds that are due to you.

They often contain a sense of urgency in the wording of the emails as well, stating that you only have a certain number of days to respond or you lose your winnings. Also, there may be links to other sites. These links may look legitimate because they may contain a real company’s name or such information. These links can send you to a dummy site asking for your personal information to update it in their systems, again trying to get your info for identity theft.

They may also simply download key-logging programs that tell the phishers what you type, giving them access to your screen names, passwords, personal information, other information which may include credit card numbers, social security numbers, names, and/or birth dates. These dummy sites may be very hard to differentiate from real ones, so getting the actual website used by the lottery that you actually use, typing it in, and comparing it to the emailed site can be helpful in finding out if the email is real.

Also you may look at the email address that sent it to you. Ask the lottery site that you use what email addresses their notifications will come from, if any, and if it is a different one that you received an email from, chances are that its fake.

Some tips to help protect you from phishing emails:

- Never send any money or fees to claim your prize. If the email is real, you wouldn’t be asked to do this.

- Never give your personal or financial information through email or in a claims or verification form.

- Don’t click on the links contained in unsolicited emails.

- When you visit a website, always enter the address directly instead of using an embedded link sent to you through an email.

- When setting up accounts with companies, also set up a password to use that verifies that you are who you say you are. This should be a password the company has to use in verifying that they are legitimate. Also a password for you to use verifying that you are who you say you are would be helpful.

The more you verify, the less chance you have to be taken for a fool. Just remember, when things look too good to be true, they usually are. So when you get an email that looks like its from a lottery company and you don’t remember playing one, beware. If their email addresses can be found online.

Tips For Lowering Your Golf Handicap Ahead of That Big Golf Holiday

June 14th, 2008 MorganClarke Posted in Sports | No Comments »

Sometimes, when people are booking a golf break with us, our clients ask us to book a couple of lessons at the beginning of their holiday. That makes sense and we can recommend the best teaches in many resorts around the world. However, here are some simple tips to help keep your golf ball budget down!

So without further ado, here are a few golf tips for lowering your golf handicap ahead of your big holiday!

1) Practice, practice, practice!

Sounds obvious, but the best golf tip is to practice as much as possible. While not everyone can get to their local golf course for a round everyday, you can still work on your swing in the privacy of your own home – chipping balls into a bucket in your back garden, or observing your swing movements in a mirror. When practice swinging, start slowly and feel the movement before speeding up to the full tempo. Even a tiny bit of daily practice will help build up your golf muscle memory - it’s amazing what 10 minutes a day can do to your golf holiday performance!

2) Prepare like you’re a pro

On the golf course, there’s a thin line between joy and frustration. If you treat every round like a professional would, you’ll have more fun. Warm up properly, spend a while in the driving range and take appropriate breaks to minimise mistakes. Play this way, and you’re guaranteed to become a more consistent player.

3) Get the right gear

Getting top notch equipment will often cost more than lessons and have less of an impact on your performance. While it’s true that the right equipment can help, it won’t magically transform your game – I’ve seen plenty of talented golfers play well with dreadful clubs and I’ve seen plenty of others play badly with high quality clubs. That said it is a good golf tip, if you’re looking to be the best you can possibly be, to invest in tailor-made clubs to suit your build and swing. And if they don’t improve your game, at least you’ll look good during your golf holiday.

4) Don’t lose track of your short game

Spending lots of time on the driving range and practicing your big swing is one thing, but make sure you don’t forget your short game…”Drive for show, putt for dought!”. It may be a less dramatic shot but good scores are made on and around the green and you use your putter more often than any other club. The good news is that the short game is easier to practice in the comfort of your own garden, and in a few weeks you’ll be in far better shape for your golf break.

5) Analyze your game

The best way of knowing your strengths and weaknesses on the golf course is to pay attention to your performance. If you pay close attention to where you make mistakes, you’ll know which areas of your game need correction. Run through your game and write down the results of each shot – you’ll soon notice where your weaknesses lie so you can practice on them.

6) Don’t expect miracles

Play to your handicap and don’t get upset when you hit a bad shot. Everyone hits bad shots – the trick is to keep your concentration and to make the next shot better.

Whether you have 6 months or 6 days until your big golf break, you’d be amazed at the improvements these tips can make in lowering your golf handicap!

The Biggest EURO Upsets

June 14th, 2008 BobHenry Posted in Sports | No Comments »

Let’s face it. While many tout the FIFA World Cup as the greatest sports tournament in the world, even the most rabid football fanatic has to admit that it’s hardly the most open or competitive. Only seven teams have won the tournament in over 70 years of competition. In fact, smaller football playing countries have about as much chance of winning the World Cup as poor, principled, ethical patriots have of winning the US presidential elections.

Which may explain why Europe is currently being gripped by an unprecedented outbreak of European Championship fever. Unlike the World Cup, where the rich and famous reign supreme, the European Football Championships tend to produce frequent upsets, and already 9 different countries have claimed the spoils at the 12 tournaments played to date.

With many sportsbooks pricing Germany as short-odds favourites for the Euro 2008, Gambling Guru takes a look back at the two biggest upsets in the history of the tournament, as an illustration of the perils of backing only the big guns at the European Football Championships.

Euro 1992 – Denmark

1992 marked the first, and probably last, occasion that the European Football championships were won by a team that failed to qualify for the tournament. Denmark was supplemented into the tournament at the last moment at the expense of Yugolslavia, who required their players to participate in the Balkans’ other major recreational past-time – civil war.

Denmark not only reached the second round despite losing their first game to Sweden, but went on to beat Netherlands by penalties in the semi-finals. The final saw Denmark stun Germany, scoring a goal in each half and keeping a clean scoresheet to claim the Euro 1992 championship.

Euro 2004 – Greece

Greece proved that football miracles do happen by winning the European Championship in 2004. Greece finished tied for second with Spain on 4 points in Group A at the conclusion of the group stage, but then earned a place in the quarterfinals as the only team in the group to beat Group A winner, Portugal.

Having found themselves making an unexpected appearance in the semi-finals, the Greeks decided to focus on defence, a tactic that flummoxed their quarterfinal opponents France, who promptly exited the tournament in a 1-0 defeat. Having sent the stunned French packing, the Greeks set their sights on the Czech Republic, and bored the eastern-Europeans into submission, 1-0, in a dreary, defensive semi-final.

The final match of the tournament saw the Greeks up against a rampant Portuguese team playing in front of a home crowd. The Greeks’ defensive game served them well against the fluent attack of Portugal, and they scored the only match point of the game against the run of play in the 57th minute, sparking celebrations in Greek communities around the world.

Euro 2008 Championship Info

Sixteen national teams have qualified for the 2008 UEFA European Championship, and the winners will have to survive four stages of gruelling competition to claim the new Henri Delaunay trophy and a cash prize of 7,5 million Euros. Euro2008 kicks off on Saturday, 7 June 2008.

5 Tips For Being a Good Guard in Basketball

June 14th, 2008 ToddJackson Posted in Sports | No Comments »

Almost every player on the court is a guard of some sort. Guarding in basketball is one of the most important jobs. Every player should be sure to understand how best to play their position.

When playing in a guard position it is important to make sure that your mind is always on the court. Focusing is important for every position, but for a guard it is one of the top things to do because a guard who is not paying attention and not focusing is not able to do their job.

In addition to that important rule of guarding, the following five tips are things every guard should take to heart and start putting to work in their game.

1. A guard must be excellent at handling the ball.

Guards handle the ball the most on the court, so being able to handle the ball is essential. A guard must be able to keep control on the ball. They should be good at catching, passing and dribbling.

2. A guard must be quick.

Since a guard is going to be controlling and moving the ball, a guard has to be quick. He has to be able to move the ball before the other team can get to it. He has to be able to move the ball down the court into scoring position fast so the points can be earned.

3. A guard must be in a good position for every catch.

Since guards move the ball they must always be focused and ready. A guard that is not ready is a lost point. When the guard is not ready for the ball another player has to step up and possibly step out of their position to do so. This leaves the team vulnerable. If a guard is not in a good position then it is important the other team members are aware and that the situation is quickly remedied.

4. A guard should play by the sideline as much as possible.

A guard is in the best position near the sidelines. Players will be able to find the guard easier and the guard can zip through the court easier from this position.

This does not meant hat a guard has to stay on the sidelines, but it is a nice place to aim to be most of the time.

5.A guard should always move in a straight line when cutting off the forward and never in a circular pattern.

The way a guard moves is important. Guards should move in the most efficient manner possible. Wasting steps is never a good choice. Straight moves are best whenever possible.

When cutting off the guard it is best to just confront and go straight instead of trying fancy moves or going around. This may be a bit harder but it is the best option. It will allow you to get where you need to go in the fastest manner and you will end up in the best position.

Relocating to France

June 14th, 2008 CarolynClayton Posted in Society | No Comments »

More and more people are moving abroad these days and France is one favourite destination. Its not surprising people are choosing France as the country has a style and look of its own and is steeped in history, it is also well known for its love of the arts and architecture. The country has a population of 64.1 million with 51% being catholics the other half pretty mixed. Its economy is the sixth largest in the world, the currency being Euro or French Franc and the size of the country is 674,843km2.

France has a significant English speaking expat population, which mostly consists of retired and so called inactive expats which are people below retirement age but not working.

France has plenty to offer families and singles wishing to emigrate to the country. It is an exciting place to live but not easy unless you learn the language. The French take pride in their languages and foreign languages are not commonly spoken. There are bilingual schools but even so you should really be thinking about teaching your whole family the language. There are plenty of French language schools offering courses to foreigners.

With regards to employment there are plenty of opportunities however you really will have to learn the language. The French government (Unitary Republic) are very committed to encouraging the unemployed back to work. The French state benefit is one of the most lucrative of the developed world. The jobless in France are very well compensated for when out of work. If your planning on moving to France you can be safe in the knowledge that you will be looked after by the state if you were to lose your employment in the future.

If you are looking for property in France then you will find your money will go further. Property prices are on average substantially lower than property in the UK. Location makes a large difference on pricing as does the age of a house. Newer houses are a lot more expensive than older houses and property in the city’s are a lot more expensive than those in the country side. In fact you can live a good life in France for much less than it would cost you to have a similar lifestyle in the UK. That and the lower property prices are nothing but enticing.

France has an excellent healthcare system but you will have to register with their mairie within 3 months of living permanently in the country. This is to provide evidence that you have financial resources to live there. You will also need evidence of personal medical insurance.

While France has many attractions to foreign nationals looking to relocate, there are a number of areas which need to be addressed. While there are genuine gaps in the employment market which can be exploited by overseas workers, the downside is the taxation situation.

It is easy to see why France has the most foreign visitors of any other country in Europe and why more and more people are relocating there. However relocating to France requires careful planning and an appreciation of the cultures of this beautify country.

5 Things Not to Do When Playing Basketball

June 14th, 2008 GregWilliams Posted in Sports | No Comments »

You are probably told most often what to do when playing basketball. However, highlighting some things you should not do is also important to mastering the sport. Being able to see what is wrong is a good thing because it allows you to be aware of the things that can get your team fouls or other violations on the court.

Every good player knows the rules, and they know what they can and can not do on the court. These five top things not to do on the court are something every player has to take to heart. One slip up may not be a big deal, but a player who really doesn’t know what they are doing wrong can end up making the team lose the game.

Make sure you and all your teammates understand that doing the following things can ruin the game for everyone.

1. Traveling

Traveling is a direct violation of the rules. Traveling is when you are carrying the ball or performing an illegal dribbling action. Players must recognize the rules regarding traveling and avoid doing it.

Traveling is a simple way to get your team a violation. Fortunately it is a simple thing to avoid if you are constantly aware of the ball and how you are handling it.

2. Losing eye contact

Eye contact is important in almost every team sport. You can not play as a team if you are not connected with your teammates. Eye contact allows you to know where other players are and what they are doing. You can often tell what a player is going to do through eye contact or send messages through eye contact that are subtle and not picked up by the opposing team.

Good eye contact should always be stressed by coaches because when eye contact is bad it leads to the ball being lost and players feeling disconnected from the team.

3. Knowing where the ball is at all times

Every player on the court, no matter where they are playing or if they are playing defense or offense, should always know where they ball is. Losing sight of the ball is a fatal mistake. Plays are missed, points are lost and games take wrong turns when players start to take the ball for granted.

You have to know where the ball is at all times. You have to always be watching where it is going because your goal is to either get the ball in the basket or stop the ball from getting to the basket. If you do not know where it is then you can not do either.

4. Leaving your position

There is always a reason that the coach places each player in certain positions. It is up to the players to follow the coach’s orders and play their position. Unless told otherwise or unless it is a great benefit to the team, a player should always be focused on their position.

When players start to leave their position it weakens the team and allows for mistakes and possible scoring by the other team.

5. Intentional fouls

Lastly, you want to avoid fouls at all costs. Some may be unavoidable and a simple accident. Other fouls, though, are intentional and most often due to a lack of self control. When playing a team sport things can get heated, but players must show self control. Letting your emotions get the best of you is no way to win a game.

Don’t Let Life Pass You By

June 13th, 2008 JonCaldwell Posted in Society | No Comments »

Thanks to the rise in aging people in Europe, that corner of the world sees growth in the life insurance industry. The study, form the Comite Europeen des Assurances (CEA) saw the growth trend this year as opposed to last year when the market was greatly affected by the sub-prime market woes in the US. The rise is also attributed to demography meaning more people get offers from more providers allowing better choices for the public. Health and Life insurance many Americans now have to forego due to rising food and fuel prices as opposed to Europe which has mostly stable economies allowing stable growth throughout the industry.

Providers are worried at the current trend that the area of commercial and personal insurance is concerned for they are forecast to flat out this year. The main issue is responsive pricing which would allow more people to get insurance as the prices fluctuate. There is no definite way of saying when the problems that are plaguing the financial sector would at least level off but if the current trend continues, the forecast is not good. The decline in the prices of commercial policies also affects the ability of health insurers to come up with innovative prices that are within reach of the ordinary office worker. Many in America are now left without ample insurance due to problems within the troubled economy. As people get displaced either by the massive lay offs that are expected to come as the troubles worsen, the need for insurance increases and many will surely face uncertainty when the industry is forced again to raise prices.

The insurance industry holds its breath as they await first quarter earnings reports. Forecasts for the year are not at all good but many still manage to hold their own weight with more attentive focus on adapting to current financial industry trends. The lower prices have enticed just enough customers to get health insurance along with the introduction of many personalized packages that are made available for the different needs that exist in the various levels of policy holders. The suspense continues as they await financial reports from the industry leaders who are key in the overall health of the industry. Many have been experiencing a slump in sales but have been able to maintain stability and keep existing policies even getting a few new ones to shore up the statistics.

The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority has agreed to move the enactment into law new proposals for changes to the insurance industry. The move would have accredited firms conduct principal reviews for the suitability of such deferred VA applications within only a few days before it is submitted to the insurance company. The amount of time they have specified has been contested by several providers may not be enough to allow them proper review and evaluation. Key representatives of the industry also asked for a different approach to the enforcement of the said rule instead of having a fixed date giving clue to a gradual implementation. The rule has been approved by the US Securities and Exchange Commission last September and has already undergone several revisions to further refine the said rule. The FINRA has also said that they would allow firms time to comply with the rule and they would be handling them in a case to case basis.

What is Good and Bad Karma?

June 13th, 2008 KeithWard Posted in Society | No Comments »

Karma has long been an idea tossed about in Western popular culture but few people outside of Eastern religions truly understand its significance. To understand the difference between good and bad karma, you must first understand what karma is.

Karma Defined

The easiest way to explain karma in simple terms is that it’s like a cosmic cause and effect cycle. Every action you take leads to a specific effect. For example, if you do a good deed for someone today, there’s a good chance that someone will do a good deed for you in the near future.

While karma may be a new idea to many of us, the concept of cause and effect is not. We all know that if we drive too fast on a wet road then apply our brakes quickly; the effect is likely to be skidding and possibly an accident. We all know that when rain falls it causes the grass to grow.

However, karma has a significant impact on our lives.

The Twofold Impact of Karma

Karma works in our lives in two ways:

*Guiding us towards our purpose in our present life - Each time we are reborn; we come with a purpose, usually to rectify something from our past life. Karma manifests itself as certain themes in our lives, perhaps problems with relationships and by paying attention to these themes and taking steps to change them in our lives we can achieve our karmic goal.

*Repaying us for our actions - In physics, we are taught that each action has an equal and opposite reaction. Karma teaches us this as well. What you do today will have repercussions in your life. That is inevitability.

By understanding these two ways in which our lives are constantly being affected by karma, we can be prepared to recognise the difference between good and bad karma.

Good & Bad Karma

Often we hear “that person has all the luck” but what should really be said is “that person has good karma.” What most of us consider luck is simply the work of karma repaying us for our actions. Sometimes those actions are from our current lives; sometimes from our past experiences. We may not always be able to trace the cause of our luck - good or bad - but we must know that it exists and guides karma’s hand.

Good karma brings us fortunate turns in our lives. We may meet a friend, find happiness, be blessed with financial security, come across a job opportunity, etc. Bad karma, on the other hand, plagues us with misfortune.

However, do not assume that every time something bad happens to you it is because of bad karma or because you have acted badly during one of your lives. In some cases, what we perceive to be an unfortunate turn of events now can lead to wonderful effects. For example, if you lose your job, it may not be a punishment but a way of opening a path to a brighter job opportunity in the near future.

Because we cannot determine the effect our actions will have, we can only strive to do what we think is the right thing and follow the path we believe we are destined to travel.
